Past Events at The Corazon
Thank you to Director Keith Cartwright who was on hand today for his film "El Grito de Yanga" and talked about the making of this film in the mountains of Veracruz that took place from 1570-1609. Yanga, who was an Africa-born Yanga led resistance against the Spanish and forced recognition of his group’s freedom, self-governance, and rights to the land. Yanga's Freedom Cry addressed the legacy of this maroon community and its founder via interviews with residents of Yanga and adjacent towns. The film paid homage to the Africans who won their freedom and examines how Yanga’s triumph and Afro-Mexican legacies still challenge us in spaces shaped by racial legacies across the Gulf.
Hope everyone who came out enjoyed this free screening. |
